Mother is an interactive sculpture that demonstrates the often one sided relationship that humanity has with machines. Machines intentionally or unintentionally are built with the core concept of interaction without any forethought to the machine. Considerations have to be made when interacting with machines continuing on into the future with the rise of rapidly advancing AI expressions and modality.
Mother changes the dynamic relationship that humanity has with machines by instilling a negative reinforcement to interactions that directly correlate to the suffering of the machine. Interaction with Mother comes in 4 different ways: shouting at the machine through an inbuilt microphone, blinding the eyes of the machine with the use of an LDR, and finally lifting or rotating the machine by way of an IMU. Through these interactions we have a set of following outputs that relate to the idea of bothering Mother, these outputs allow Mother to express itself when interaction becomes too much via the means of an amplified speaker setup with an Adafruit Arduino Audio FX Sound Board, LEDs to colour code emotional states, and an LCD screen that displays some of its feelings in various remarks.
